JET Pythons Code of Ethics
As snake hobbyists and breeders, we do more than just produce
animals. With us lies the responsibility of producing and keeping animals, which
are not only beautifully colored and pleasing to look at, but more importantly
ones that are healthy and of good mental well being.
I recognize that as a breeder I have a responsibility to protect, preserve and
insure the welfare of the animals that I sell, produce, breed, and own. I
therefore subscribe to the following code of ethics.
General Ethics:
1. To provide for each animal in my care an environment which meets their
physical and psychological needs. This includes but is not limited to: correct nutrition,
appropriate living conditions, proper heating, bedding, cage
accessories and necessary
health care.
2. To promote and encourage responsible pet ownership.
3. To further my studies which increases my knowledge of the science of keeping
and breeding the animals in my collection.
4. To maintain an interest in all animals which I sell and if possible arrange
for the return or relocation of an animal of my breeding which is in need or no
longer wanted.
Breeding Ethics:
1. To breed only animals which are sexually mature, in good health, and are free
from hereditary defects, parasitic infestation, and communicable disease.
2. To discontinue the breeding of any animal that may consistently produce
offspring who have a defect or disorder which is detrimental to the animals’
well-being, or makes them unsuitable as breeder or companion animals.
3. To provide any gravid females and the resulting clutches with the housing,
nutrition, and care necessary to meet their physical and psychological needs and
not produce more offspring than can be properly housed and cared for until sold.
4. To maintain a safe breeding regiment including but not limited to:
maintaining adequate temperatures through out the breeding season and not
inviting health issues by dropping temperatures too low simply to illicit breeding
instincts, maintaining good weight and feeding as required throughout the
breeding season and removing animals from breeding which may fall below
acceptable limits, limiting the number of pairings and providing plenty of rest
time for all breeding males.
Selling Ethics:
1. To not sell or otherwise place hatchlings that are not 100% healthy and
established feeders.
2. To consciously seek the best possible homes for animals which I place or
sell.
3. To sell only healthy animals who are free from parasites.
4. To stand behind the condition and quality of all animals as represented at
the time of sale.
5. To take back or find a home for any animal whose placement is not successful
if necessary.
6. To provide to purchaser instructions on feeding, housing, and general
care as needed.
7. To provide the new owner with ongoing support and assistance with concerns
that may arise.
8. When selling an animal to a novice keeper, to provide support, advice,
education, and guidance to assist them in achieving their goals.
